Thai police campaigning for safe drive during New Year holidays

BANGKOK, December 25 (TNA) - Thai police have kicked start the government-supported safe New Year celebrations campaign to reduce road accidents during the ongoing year-end festive holiday, particularly from December 29, 2012-January 4, 2013 declared as the “seven high risk travel days”. Assistant National Police Chief Police Lieutenant General Ruangsak Jarit-ake presided over a ceremony to launch the official campaign, in conjunction with the private sector, at an express way on the Rama II Road in Bangkok on Tuesday, saying that the nationwide campaign is aimed at promoting safe driving among New Year celebrants, especially during the so-called seven dangerous days. Police Lieutenant General Ruangsak encouraged those travelling from Bangkok to provincial destinations or vice versa in order to spend their New Year holiday with family to follow traffic rules and always stay within speed limit. Official statistics showed Thailand had recorded over 6,400 fatalities from road accidents during the first nine months of this year, causing an about 400-million-baht loss to the nation. (TNA)
