Syria’s UN envoy says ‘wise people’ in US administration understand Assad’s role

UNITED NATIONS, September 17. /TASS/. Syria's UN Ambassador Bashar Ja'afari has said some "wise people" within the US administration understand the role of President Bashar Assad in Syria and do not call for his resignation. "Some wise people within the American administration think this way. Some, but not all the decision-makers think this way," Ja'afari said. The Syrian diplomat has compared the US administration’ behavior with a performance of a bad clown. "They are trying to please everybody, but at the same time they are not creative in making people laughing and smiling." "They are still doing the circus 19th century way, not like the Russian circus," he said. Russia’s UN envoy Vitaly Churkin told CBS in an interview on Tuesday that the United States no longer wants the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad to fall and also seeks to fight the Islamic State terrorist group in a way which is not going to harm the Syrian government. The diplomat said that the US position was getting closer to the Russian view on Syria. "They [US authorities] have made a lot great progress in understanding the complexities of the situation. To me, it is absolutely clear of the very serious concerns of the American government now is that the Assad regime will fall and (IS) will take over Damascus and the United States will be blamed for that," Churkin stressed. Washington has repeatedly stated that Assad must step down for the conflict to be resolved, and last week President Barack Obama said Russia's ongoing support for Assad was "a big mistake." Read more
