Iraq Assumes a Leading Position on UNESCO's Committee for the Recovery of Cultural Property

Baghdad /NINA/ -Iraq has been elected Vice-Chair of the Intergovernmental Committee on the Return of Cultural Property to its Countries of Origin or its Restitution in Case of Illicit Appropriation (ICPRCP) within the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), a significant step that strengthens the country's position in the field of protecting cultural heritage.

The Ministry of Education explained in a statement: "The voting process took place at the organization's headquarters in Paris, where Asaad Turki Suwari, the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Iraq to UNESCO, gained the confidence of the member states to assume this leadership position."

The statement indicated: "This achievement reflects the strength of Iraqi diplomatic efforts in issues of preserving antiquities and recovering smuggled artifacts, and expands Baghdad's opportunities to contribute to shaping international policies aimed at curbing the illicit trafficking of cultural property, thus consolidating its global standing." /End
