SANKRANTI 2 LAST
Makar Sankranti was also celebrated as kite festival in
Rajasthan.
A large number of devotees took a holy in Galta Teerth in
Jaipur and Pushkar lake in Ajmer, about 100 km from the state
capital.
In the national capital, Pongal, Makar Sankranti and Bihu
was celebrated with much fanfare despite cold weather
conditions.
While the Assamese community celebrated Bihu by holding
community feasts, Tamilians in the city cooked sweet rice and
offered it to the Sun God along with sugarcane.
The Tamil calendar has been revised and the practice of
celebrating the Tamil New Year was shifted last year from
'Chithirai' to 'Thai' after the State Assembly passed a law in
this regard on the "request of Tamil scholars."
In Madurai in Tamil Nadu, 21 persons were injured in the
'jallikattu' (taming the bulls) sport held as part of Pongal
festival. As many as 100 bulls participated in the Jallikattu.
People in Orissa prepared special dishes with rice,
butter, milk and coconut and offered them to the Sun God on
the occasion.
Rising prices failed to dampen the festivities in
Karnataka where people thronged the markets to do their last
minute shopping for sugarcane, flowers, turmeric, and
"yellu-bella" (a ready mixture of sesame, groundnut, dried
coconut and jaggery) to share it with their neighbours and
friends.
To mark the occasion, people adorned their houses with
colourful rangolis. PTI SMI
