India named guest country at Turin book fair
New Delhi, Jan 20 (PTI) India has been named the guest
country at the 23rd Turin International Book Fair in Italy
from May 13-17.
"India has always had a leading role in the collective
imagination of Italians, to the point of appearing as a refuge
and place of radical difference for those who feel
dissatisfied with Western models of life and thought," said
the organisers of the fair, known as Salone Internazionale del
Libro di Torino in Italian.
"Compared to the emigrant writers who recount the divides
of those who, having abandoned their country of origin, have
decided to live in the West, the 2010 Fair wants to give
priority to writers who have stayed in their country, to live
and describe a reality that with its overflowing humanity
remains a gigantic source of stories able to involve the
reader," a statement said.
Alongside writers widely appreciated in the West, such as
Anita Desai and Anita Nair, Vikas Swarup, the diplomat-writer
who has found worldwide fame through the film "Slumdog
Millionaire" taken from his novel, has also confirmed his
participation, the organisers said. MORE PTI ZMN
