BROWN-INDIA 2 LST
"The long march to liberty is now being matched by the
rapid march towards prosperity. And my deep conviction is that
together we can shape a future of progress and justice", he
said.
Recalling the Diwali reception at 10, Downing Street,
Brown said his interaction with prominent Britons of Indian
origin reminded him of "deep respect and enduring friendship"
between the world’s oldest and largest democracies.
Given the "large and integrated" Indian community in
Britain, Brown said events in India such as the Mumbai terror
attacks "touch us all deeply here".
Britain and India were together confronting major
issues such as international terrorism, climate change and
nuclear proliferation, he added.
With one third of the world’s poor India is crucial to
the global success of the Millennium Development Goals, he
wrote, and added that by next year Britain will have provided
more than 825 million pound – up to 500 million pound of which
will be spent on health and education – to India since 2008.
"I have been inspired by how many girls in India have
benefited from going to school and getting training and
getting jobs.
So, the UK is investing in teachers and classrooms in
India because we must give every young child the basic right
to education", Brown wrote. PTI PS
