PM holds meeting on implementation of Right To Education Act



New Delhi, Jan 22 (PTI) Prime Minister of India Manmohan
Singh on Friday took stock of the progress on implementation
of Right to Education Act which provides for free and
compulsory education as a fundamental right of every child in
the 6-14 age bracket.

The meeting was attended by Human Resource and Development
(HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal, senior officials from the ministry
and the Planning Commission, official sources said.
All issues, including the funding pattern and rules for
implementation of the Act were discussed at the meeting, they
said.
As per the ministry's estimate, Rs 1.71 lakh crore would
be needed in the next five years for implementation of the
Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, which
was passed by Parliament in July last year.
The Act is yet to be notified as the rules and funding
pattern between the states and the Centre are yet to be
finalised.
The ministry has prepared three models of funding pattern
for implementation of the Act. These models suggest different
funds sharing pattern between the Centre and the states in the
ratio of 75:25, 65:35 and 55:45.
The ministry has forwarded these funding patterns to the
