CLIMATE-BASIC 2 LST

India among other BASIC nations had brokered a deal with
the US to take note of the Accord thus ending the impasse at
the Copenhagen summit in Denmark in December last year.
In the absence of consensus, the Accord did not set
binding targets for greenhouse gas emissions reductions,
However, it suggested passage of a binding global climate deal
at the next climate talks in Mexico.
Noting that most of the UN members failed to agree with
the Accord, Pachauri said, "I expect the BASIC members to
involve all the left-out countries and also to come up with a
very clear strategy and approach and the time-table by which
they do that."
"I think the BASIC countries should give some attention
to this, he added.
Carlos Minc, Brazil Minister of Environment, Buyelwa
Sonjica, South Africa Minister of Water and Environmental
Affairs and Xie Zhenhua, Vice-Chairman, National Development
and Reform Commission of China are expected to participate the
meeting along with Indian Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh.
Besides chalking out climate change strategy, the
BASIC members will also work out the targets and climate
actions it has to submit under the Copenhagen Accord by
January 31.
However, Pacuari favoured postponing of the UN deadline
for submitting the climate action and emission targets for the
UN members terming "it a practical necessity for the nations."
"If the UN decides to postpone its deadline, then I
think it's a practical necessity. The countries are really at
this stage not ready where they could provide pledges
voluntarily or otherwise," he noted. PTI
