"The four 19-year-olds from Carlton, Abbotsford,
Warrandyte and Northcote and a 20-year-old from Donvale have
been bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on 5
April," it said, adding the remaining four males have been
released pending further investigation.
Police confirmed the two victims were Indian students but
were unable to say whether the comments made were racial. The
two victims did not to want to be identified, police said.
The attack comes weeks after Indian student Nitin Garg
was stabbed to death in a park in Yarraville in Melbourne's
inner-west.
The incident happened on January 3 when Nitin, who
migrated from Punjab, was attacked in a park when he was
walking towards a fast-food outlet where he worked part-time.
Another Indian, 25-year-old Ranjodh Singh was also found
dead in New South Wales, and the police is struggling for
leads into the two cases.
Singh's body was found in Griffith in the early hours of
December 29 in a partially-burnt state.
Evans said Indians were respected for their contribution
in Australia, and the Government was doing all it could to
stop the violence, ABC news said.
"What I wanted to do today is reinforce to the Indian
people who have become Australian citizens, or those who are
here temporarily as students, that they're welcome here in
Australia," he said. (MORE) PTI NC
