Pakistan arrests five Indian fishermen

Islamabad, Jan 29 (PTI) Pakistan’s Maritime Security
Agency has apprehended five Indian fishermen along with their
boat for allegedly fishing illegally in the country's waters,
authorities said Friday.
The Indian fishing boat and its five-member crew were
detained Thursday in Pakistan’s Exclusive Economic Zone, said
a statement from the MSA.
The fishermen are being interrogated by security
agencies to establish their identity and "intent for
operating" in Pakistani waters, it added.
The MSA said it would continue all-out efforts to
safeguard Pakistan's maritime interests in view of "prevailing
security concerns."
India and Pakistan arrest dozens of fishermen every
year for violating each other's maritime boundaries and many
of them languish in jail for years.
A total of 570 Indian nationals, including 510
fishermen, are currently in Pakistani jails, according to
information recently provided to parliament.
A total of 785 fishermen are among 848 Pakistanis
currently being held in Indian prisons.
Islamabad proposed the revival of the Judicial
Committee on Prisoners, which has not met since the Mumbai
terror attacks in November 2008, when it freed 100 Indian
fishermen last month. PTI
