UN report praises NREGS

New Delhi, Feb 2 (PTI) The United Nations has praised the
Indian government's rural employment guarantee scheme (NREGS),
saying such inclusive anti-poverty schemes are more effective
than others like BPL cards which are selective in nature.

"... commitment to eradicating poverty ... (requires) an
integrated approach to economic and social policies for the
benefit of all citizens...it calls for more developmentally-
oriented and progressive state activism and universalism as
opposed to selectivity," the UN report on World Social
Situation 2010 said.
Titled 'Rethinking Poverty,' the report launched globally
last week, points out some of the major problems of poverty
measurement and also the programmes that have worked and
others which have not, in reducing poverty.
"Broadly speaking, employment guarantee scheme is more
likely to have an impact on poverty," UN assistant secretary
general in the department of economic and social affairs KS
Jomo told PTI.
Affirming this, Jawaharlal Nehru University professor of
economics Jayati Ghosh said, "the NREGS is much more value for
money than targeted schemes like BPL cards. NREGS does not
entail identifying poor and is more universal, for whoever
wishes to take up the job."
The National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS)
promises 100 days of work every year to at least one adult
member of every rural household at a minimum wage. MORE PTI MG
