India`s opposition leader demands immediate release of Fonseka

New Delhi, Feb 10 (PTI) Leader of Opposition in the Lok
Sabha, lower house of Indian Parliament, Sushma Swaraj
Wednesday said Bhartiya Janata Party was disturbed by the
arrest of former Sri Lanka army chief General Sarath Fonseka
and requested President Mahinda Rajapaksa to release him
immediately.
"We are disturbed by the news reports about the arrest and
detention of General Sarath Fonseka, the opposition candidate
in the recent presidential elections in Sri Lanka," Swaraj
said in a statement.
She asserted that as the largest democracy India could not
approve of this, especially when it was taking place in its
neighbourhood.
"We call upon President Mahinda Rajapaksa to ensure the
safety and well-being of the opposition leader and request his
release immediately," Swaraj said.
Since the death of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam Chief
V Prabhakaran last year, BJP, the main opposition party, has
raised the issue of welfare of Tamil refugees in Sri Lanka
and asked the Indian government repeatedly to take up the
matter with the Rajapaksa government. PTI
