Indian taxi driver's killer may have fled New Zealand: Police

Melbourne, Feb 14 (PTI) Police in Auckland Sunday said
that Indian-origin taxi driver Hiren Mohini's suspected killer
may have fled New Zealand.

Mohini, 39, died in Mt Eden almost two weeks ago after
he was repeatedly stabbed in his cab by a passenger he picked
up from Auckland's central business district. And, last week,
the police released security camera footage of an Asian man
they said could be the killer.
But, investigation head Detective Senior Sergeant
Hywel Jones, who called the suspected killer "cold, callous
and brutal", told the 'New Zealand Herald' newspaper that it
was possible the suspected killer may have left the country.
In fact, the 90-second video clip shows an Asian-
looking man carrying a bag similar to a distinctive bloodied
blue bag found a short distance from where Mohini died. The
suspect can be seen walking through the city to the Federal
Street, where he gets into his cab.
The footage also featured on the TV show 'Police
Ten 7' on Thursday night, when Jones revealed details of the
suspect seen in the area shortly after Mohini's death. He was
seen running along View Road towards Esplanade Road, and soon
after a man was reported standing on a carport.
"The person on the carport was bare from the waist up
so it's possible he had discarded whatever top he was wearing.
If anyone has found clothing they're not familiar with or is
missing clothing or laundry from clothes lines, we need to
hear from them," Jones said.
Mohini, survived by his wife Falguni and two daughters
-- Yashvi (5) and Hetvi (3), gave up his job as an accountant
for Shell in India and came to New Zealand in 2003 from his
hometown of Mumbai. PTI MOT
