Two AK assault rifles, three magazines and a hand grenade
were recovered from the slain militants, Chourasia said.
Official sources said hundreds of people took to the
streets and pelted stones on the police post demanding bodies
of the slain militants.
"As both the militants were locals, the villagers came
out and demanded their bodies for burial," they said, adding a
shutdown was also observed in the area to mourn their death.
Chourasia said police lobbed teargas shells to disperse
the violent mob. "The situation is well under control at the
moment," he said, adding none was hurt in the brief clash.
In a separate operation, another top LeT militant, Bashir
Ahmed alais Abu Wakas was killed at Chandroi-Triyath belt of
Kalakote in Rajouri district of Jammu region.
Acting on a tip-off that four militants, including top
Pakistan commander Abdullah Inqullabi, were operating in the
belt, a police team and Rashtriya Rifles troops cordoned off
the area last evening, police said.
The militants opened indiscriminate fire prompting the
police to retaliate and in the ensuing gunbattle Bashir was
killed, they added.
An AK rifle, two grenades and some magazines were
recovered from him.
Timely detection of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED),
weighing 5.5 kg, averted a major tragedy in Sopore, 55 kms
from here in Baramulla district of North Kashmir, a police
spokesman said.
The IED was planted by militants beneath a bridge in the
town and was recovered by police, he said, adding a bomb
disposal squad was immediately summoned and the IED was later
defused in an open field. PTI AMS
