TWO NIGERIAN DRUG OFFENDERS TO BE EXECUTED SOON

Jakarta, June 24 (ANTARA) - The Attorney General's Office (AGO) is currenly coordinating preparations for the execution in Central Java later this week of two Nigerian nationals sentenced to death for drug offenses, a spokesman said.

"The plan is to carry out the execution (of Samuel Iwacheukwu Okoye and Hansen Antony Nwaosya) this week," Junior Attorney General for General Crimes Abdul Hakim Ritonga said.

There was still no certainty about the exact date because this depended on the readiness and security conditions of the place where the execution would take place, he said.

He said actually the two Nigerians had to be executed in Tangerang, Banten province, where they had been put on trial and sentenced. But the two were now being held in a jail in Nusakambangan, Central Java, and it was risky for them to be transported to Tangerang.

"Therefore, we have decided to carry it out in Central Java," Ritonga said.

Right now officials from the AGO and the Tangerang high prosecutor's office are in Central Java to prepare the execution together with offcials of the Central Java high prosecutor's office, he said.
