POLICE ARREST 17 STUDENTS FOR ANARCHIC ACTION IN JAKARTA

Jakarta, June 25 (ANTARA) - Police arrested 17 people on charges of anarchic behaviour while staging an anti-fuel price hike rally outside the parliamentary building here on Tuesday night.

Head of the National Police's public relations division Insp. Gen. Abubakar Nataprawira said here on Tuesday night that all the 17 people were still unswering police's questions over their anarchic acts.

In addition to conducting the rally outside the parliamentary building, the university students also held a demonstration in front of the Atmajaya University, near the parliamentary building.

On the occasion, police also confiscated three used-tyres, dozens of molotov cocktails, sticks, flags and a large amount of stones as evidence.
In the meantime, spokesman for the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Headquarters Chief Commissioner Ketut Untung Yoga Ana said they were arrested because they had pelted stones and threw rocks at the police.

"Many police officers sustained bruises," he said.

Apart from that, the wreck of an Avanza van after being torched by unidentified people during the rally in front of Atmajaya University on the same occasion, was brought to the Jakarta metropolitan police headquarters.

The silver car with license plate B 1019 PQ was turned over by a group of people before setting fire to it during the rally.
