AZERI MP MEETS CoE COMMISSIONER FOR HUMAN RIGHTS
Baku, March 5 (AzerTac). Head of Azerbaijan`s parliamentary delegation to PACE Samad Seyidov has met the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammarberg.
Seyidov briefed Hammarberg on the ongoing democratic reforms in Azerbaijan and the state of implementation of the country`s commitments towards CoE.
He said his country attaches great importance to the protection of human rights. “But some problems, including the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict create serious obstacles in this direction.”
Seyidov underscored in the wake of the conflict, the rights of more than one million of Azerbaijanis were grossly violated.
He said the conflict must be settled on the basis of the principles of international law, particularly Azerbaijan`s territorial integrity.
Thomas Hammarberg, in turn, said as part of the visit he had several meetings in Baku and Nakhchivan to discuss a number of issues including human rights, freedom of press, and activities of law enforcement bodies and development of civil society.
Hammarberg noted he accepts the fact that the conflict was resulted in the violation of human rights, and that the Commissioner for Human Rights intends to increase efforts to tackle the problem.
