Iran completes second stage of war games
TEHRAN, May 8 (MNA) -- The Iranian Navy and Air Force conducted military operations in the Sea of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday and Friday during the second stage of the massive war games currently underway.
The eight-day maneuver, entitled Velayat-89, started on Wednesday, covering a span of about 250,000 square kilometers from the Strait of Hormuz to the northern Indian Ocean.
Navy destroyers, missile launchers, heavy and light submarines, and flight units were used to provide security for the shipping lines.
On Friday, Rear Admiral Qasem Rostamabadi said that destroyers and gunboats as well as special operational forces monitored passing ships.
Chemical attacks by hypothetical enemy forces were successfully countered through domestically manufactured military equipment, Rostamabadi added.
Domestically manufactured systems were also used to confront hypothetical enemy divers and guerillas, who penetrated into the coastal areas, he stated.
Elsewhere in his remarks, he said representatives from three regional countries will observe the war games during the next stages.
It was reported that electronic warfare and anti-electronic warfare operations were also conducted during the second stage of the maneuvers.
Reconnaissance and unmanned aircraft carried out some operations in the area as well.
Cobra helicopters also destroyed targets, which were on the sea and under the sea using rockets and 20-mm rounds.
Surveillance drones gathered information about hypothetical enemy forces through the use of radar and military monitoring systems.
The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps held five-day maneuvers in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz in late April, during which the IRGC tested missiles and a new speedboat capable of destroying enemy ships.
