QUAKE SHAKES N SULAWESI

Manado, N Sulawesi, July 10 (ANTARA) - An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale shook the northern part of Indonesia's Sulawesi island on Thursday but there was no immediate report of casualties or material damage.

The epicenter of the quake which struck at 01.29 p.m. was in the sea about 110 km northwest of Bitung town in North Sulawesi province at a depth of 57 km, the spokesman for the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) in Manado, Mudjianto, said.

The quake did not have the potential of causing a tsunami, he said.

"Local people need not worry or panick because the quake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami," he said.

He said the quake was felt by people living in Sangihe and Talaud districts, in Bitung and Manado cities at IV-V on the mercally modified scale.
