ARMY, HEALTH MINISTRY RESUME COOPERATION ON HEALTH SERVICE

Jakarta, July 11 (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Health and the Army have agreed to resume their cooperation healthcare which they established in 1999 and expired in 2004.

Army Chief of Staff General Agustadi Sasongko Purnomo and Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the resumption of the cooperation here on Thursday.

"This is a resumption of a cooperation which was signed in 1999 and expired in 2004. The cooperation is renewed for another five years because it turns out to be beneficial for improving the people's health," Minister Siti Fadilah said.

She said that the cooperation included various things such as provision of basic health services and references, post disaster healthcare, health service in border and conflict areas, control of contagious diseases, environmental health, preparation of medical personnel and technological health research and development.

In the meantime, Army Chief General Agustadi said that all of the programs were to be carried out by utilizing the available resources available at both sides.

He said that the Health Ministry would be responsible for facilitating the procurement of medicines, medical equipment, medical personnel and healthcare facilities.

The Army will provide health services and all resources it has from the headquarters down to regional branches to support the implementation of the medical service programs.

Siti Fadilah said the Ministry of Health had established various cooperation in handling various health problems.

She said that the cooperation was carried out in the form of, for example, social service activities, establishment of a standby natural disaster brigade, Ambulance Team 118, and the handling of post tsunami problems in Aceh and the earthquake in Yogyakarta.

"The cooperation is also carried out in the form of health assistance for other countries which also experienced natural disasters such in China, Iran and the Philippines," she said.

She added that Army personnel were also involved in the handling of malaria, tuberculosis and bird flu.
