GOVT AIMS TO ATTRACT 1 MILLION CHINESE TOURISTS PER YEAR

Jakarta, July 11 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Culture and Tourism Ministry has set itself a target of enticing one million Chinese tourists per annum.

In the January-May 2008 period around 168,000 Chinese tourists visited Indonesia compared to 57,301 in the same period last year, the ministry's director general of marketing, Sapta Nirwandar said on Thursday.

The increase in the number of Chinese tourists visiting Indonesia was attributable to the aggressive tourism promotion conducted by the ministry, he said.

To attract Chinese tourists, the ministry put "Visit Indonesia Year 2008" ads on 50 buses operating in Beijing, he said.

In addition, he said his side also organized a "Hsu" family reunion as part of the tourism campaigns. Hsu refers to one of Chinese clans.

"In September all Hsu families living everywhere will gather in Jakarta," he said.

China is one of the targets of Indonesian tourism campaigns besides Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Germany, Russia, Australia, India and Arab countries
