RI PRESIDENT CALLS FOR CONCRETE SUPPORTS FOR PALESTINE

Jakarta, July 14 (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has called on international community to give concrete help and support, instead of merely expressing sympathy, to Palestinians.

Speaking at the opening of the Ministerial Conference on Capacity Building for Palestine here, Monday, Yudhoyono said, at present was no longer time to just express sympathy to Palestine for the problems they were facing.

"We are not satisfied with just expression of sympathy to Palestinians. Indonesia and South Africa in cooperation with other Asian and African countries are focusing on efforts to empower Palestinian people in all sectors," he said.

Capacity building in all sectors, he added, would help Palestinians to prepare for their country's independence.

The head of state took an example of Indonesia and Palestine cooperation in education program for both countries' diplomats. "The program is part of our bilateral cooperation."Under the program, Indonesia would share experiences of its diplomats in the fights to reach the national freedom and independence.

The President expressed hope that the two-day conference could provide concrete contribution to Palestine.

Meanwhile, Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad said, capacity building was necessary for the national independence.

"We see that asset in human resources is badly needed, thuseducation sector should be included in this capacity building," he said.

Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Nur Hasan Wirajuda said 219 representatives from 55 countries participated in the conference, organized on July 14 and 15, 2008, under the New Asian-African Strategic Partnership framework.

"Peace in Palestine will contribute to the world peace," he said.
