GOVT PLEDGES RP90 B FOR ASEAN BEACH GAMES

Denpasar, July 14 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government has pledged Rp90 billion in aid to ensure the success of Asean Beach Games (ABG) due to take place in Bali on October 18-26.

The world-class sports event would cost an estimated Rp200 billion, the day-to-day chief of the event's organizing committee, Rita Subowo, said on Monday.

"We will seek sponsorship to cover the shortfall," she said on the sidelines of a meeting with the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) delegation.

She said she was optimistic the shortfall could be overcome as a number of domestic and foreign companies had expressed interest in sponsoring the event which will bring together around 10,000 athletes from 41 countries.

She said preparations for the event had been 40 percent completed.
