SUNDA STRAIT BRIDGE IN INDONESIA TO GENERATE ECONOMIC GROWTH: MINISTER
Jakarta, June 17 (ANTARA) - Chief Economic Minister Hatta Rajasa said that the Sunda strait bridge whose construction will start in 2014 is expected to help generate economic growth in the eastern coastal areas of Sumatra.
"The Sunda strait bridge presence will help shift industry to the area so that the density in Java could be reduced. After all, the flow of goods will increase and commodities in Sumatra would flow speedily," the minister said after a coordination meeting on the construction of the Sunda bridge at his office here on Thursday.
He also expected that a special economic zone would be formed in Sumatra`s eastern areas while the bridge would minimize obstacles that so far hampered the flows of logistics in the strait.
"We are studying the creation of (economic) areas. It is not a merely a bridge but also zones. We hope these zones would develop into economic growth areas," the minister said.
The coordinating minister for economic affairs said that the project which was worth about US$10-US$15 billion was expected to become a master piece of the Indonesian sons with ideas, planning and projects designed by themselves.
"We have talked a lot of things but it is still too premature to be made public. But this is a program which gains the government`s concern because it is a strategic program. What is clear we will depend on the state budget (for its development)," the minister said.***2***
