Embassy of Greece in Baku hosts exhibition of the Battle of Marathon
Baku, December 14 (AzerTAc). The Embassy of Greece and the Ministry of Tourism and Culture of Azerbaijan were the hosts of an exhibition of collection material related to the battle of Marathon, a battle between Ancient Athenians and Persians and whose outcome is regarded as having changed the course of European history and the western world.
Delivering a speech at the opening ceremony the Greek Ambassador to Azerbaijan Ioannis Metaxas said that the battle of Marathon as well as the naval Battle of Salamis, which occurred 10 years later – in 480 BC, is the base stone of Greek ancient history: 'This date enabled Athenians, Spartans as well as all Greeks to continue living free. If these battles suffered a setback, then, the course of the Greek ancient history would completely be different, and today the ancient Greek civilization would not have been submitted to us as it is.'
The event was also attended by Permanent Representative of the European Union in Azerbaijan Roland Kobia, Head of OSCE Office in Baku Ali Bilge Cankorel, Turkey`s Ambassador to Azerbaijan Hulusi Kilic and other representatives of international organizations in Azerbaijan.
