VP : NATIONAL HEROES` SPIRIT MUST BE INHERITED BY NEXT GENERATIONS
Jakarta, Aug 8 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla said the spirit of national heroes who had courage, idealism, and high ambition should also be possessed by Indonesia's next generations.
"Our national heroes were in essence people with great courage, they dared to take risks in their struggle to achive their ideals and therefore we have to respect them and pass on their spirit to the coming generations," the vice president said at the opening of a congress of the Indonesian National Heroes' Families' Association (IKPNI) here on Friday.
According to the vice president, certain people at present had courage but no idealism and high ambition, others had idealism but not courage, and still others had courage to take risks but only for their own popularity and interest.
"People like these are not heroes. Our next heroes should be those who are well versed in scientific, economic, environmental, and social aspects and work for the dignity and prosperity of our nation," Kalla said.
Therefore, the vice president called on all Indonesians to inherit and nurture the spirit of the national heroes.
"In the past heroes were respected because of their high spirit and courage, today a nation is respected because of its economic capability," Kalla said, adding that the next generations should be new heroes with courage to make the nation prosper.
