POLICE NAME FOUR SUSPECTS IN RIAU WOODLAND FIRES
Pekanbaru, Indonesia, Aug 9 (ANTARA) - Police have named four suspects in woodland fires that caused smog in Kampar and Bengkalis districts, Riau province.
They were believed to have opened farm land through slash-and-burn practices, Chief of the Riau Provincial Police Brig. Gen. Hadiatmoko said on Saturday.
"They are ordinary people," he said.
He said police were still interrogating the suspects so that he could not comment on the possibility of a company being involved in the case.
If they eventually proved to have committed the offense merely because of ignorance, they would only be given a warning and not be liable to legal sanction, he said.
An ANTARA journalist observed smog blanketed Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport's runway in the provincial capital of Pekanbaru on Saturday morning but it did not disturb flight schedules.
