Iran, Russia have great potential to realize: Iran’s ex-FM

TEHRAN, Jan.1(MNA)-- Iran and Russia have great potential to utilize to expand bilateral relations and cooperation, former Iranian foreign minister said.

Manouchehr Mottaki made the remarks in an interview with the editor in chief of Russian weekly magazine Zavtra.

“Iran and Russia have great potential for joint interactions and development,” Mottaki noted.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he said the allegations by the U.S. that Iran is trying to make nuclear bombs are just an excuse.

Washington is not worried about Iran’s nuclear program, rather it is angry over the Islamic Republic’s progress in nuclear technology without the U.S. authorization, he explained.

The U.S. is also furious about Iran’s stance on some issues as Tehran for instance cannot be indifferent to the killings of Afghans, the former top diplomat explained.

Iran has always said that the U.S. was behind the formation of Taliban and al-Qaeda terrorist group which finally led to the emergence of extremism in the region, the former minister stated.

He added relations between Iran and the U.S. is in a state of neither war nor peace.

Mottaki also pointed to the U.S. invasion of Iraq, saying American troops have been fighting in Iraq for nearly 7 years and Washington has sought help from Iran.

But, he said, Iran in response to the request has said “change your policy and then Iran will help you.”

On possible threat of war by the U.S. and Israel on Iran, Mottaki said the possibility of attack on Iran by either U.S. or Israel cannot be underestimated.

The United States invaded Afghanistan under an illusion that it can emerge victorious in a short time and then turn against Iran, he said, adding it has been seven to eight years the U.S. has been thinking of launching attacks on Iran.

Thus, Iran should be in full military preparedness in the face of war by the U.S. or Israel, he noted.
