GOVT LEAVES INVESTIGATION INTO WAMENA INCIDENT TO LAW ENFORCERS

Jakarta, Aug 11 (ANTARA) - The government is fully leaving the investigation of last Saturday's fatal shooting of a civilian resident during an "Indigeous People Day" rally in Wamena, Papua, to the local law enforcing agencies, a spokesman said.

"The law-enforcing agencies exist just for such purposes, so we must leave it to them to investiagte the case, why it had to happen," Minister/State Secretary Hatta Rajasa said after a meeting with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the presidential office here Monday.

He said the president was fully committed to the enforcement of the law so that the incident in Wamena must be investigated comprehensively and conclusively.
Asked whether the president had given a special instruction to the National Police Chief to handle the matter, Rajasa said he was not aware there was such a special order.

"But usually, in cases like this, the National Police Chief will take quick action," the minister said.

The incident occurred at Tsinagma field in Wamena, Jayawijaya district, Papua, on August 9 when thousands of people were observing Indigenous People Day by the hoisting of the "Morning Star" flag of the separatist Free Papua Organization (OPM) together with the national Indonesian and United Nations flags.

As flying the OPM colors was an illegal act , police intervened and pulled down the flag after firing warning shots. In the process a civilian in the crowd, identified as Atinus Tabuni (40), was somehow fatally hit by a bullet.
Meanwhile, according to a report from Jayapura, police on Monday scoured the field in Wamena where Saturday's rally had taken place to collect the bullets which police had fired on the occasion. But until late in the afternoon, they had not found any bullet, and it was eventually decided to continue the search on Tuesday (Aug 12).

The official spokesman of the Papua provincial police headquarters, Senior Commissioner Agus Riyanto, told the Antara bureau in Jayapura the search for the bullets was personally witnessed by Papua Police Chief Inspector General Eko Danto.

Papua police were also questioning 17 people who had witnessed Saturday's incident at the rally organized by the Papua Customary Council (DAP). Of the 17 people , 14 were police officers.
