Iran calls on ICRC to determine fate of former Iranian deputy defense minister
TEHRAN, Jan. 4 (MNA)-- Iranian Acting Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi sent a letter to International Committee of the Red Cross President Jakob Kellenberger, urging the committee to help determine the fate of former Iranian deputy defense minister Alireza Asgari who has reportedly died in detention in Israel.
Zionist sources have claimed that Asgari had committed suicide in a solitary confinement in Israel’s Ayalon prison, but there are reports that spy agency Mossad has killed Asgari.
The Zionist media outlets had previously claimed that Asgari defected to the West and was granted asylum in a Western country. Iran says Asgari was abducted by Mossad agents in Turkey on December 9, 2006.
“The recently released news about the fate of the former Iranian official has raised concern in Iran and we request the International Committee of the Red Cross to try to clarify the issue,” Salehi said in the letter published on Tuesday.
“Abduction of Asgari is a clear violation of international law and a clear example of the state-sponsored terrorism,” he stated.
“This case also has human aspects, so we expect that the ICRC makes serious efforts to determine the fate of Asgari,” he noted.
On Thursday, Salehi had called on United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to take action over the Asgari case.
“The UN charter has burdened the UN secretary general with an important responsibility, so we request that you promptly make an effort to clarify the Asgari case,” Salehi said.
