‘Formation of national unity govt. is a great triumph for Iraq’
TEHRAN, Jan.6(MNA) -- Iranian Supreme National Security Council Secretary Saeed Jalili said that the formation of a national unity government is a great triumph for the Iraqi nation.
He made the remarks at a meeting with Iraqi MP Ibrahim Jaafari in Tehran on Wednesday.
It is of the utmost importance for Iraq that all the country’s diverse groups maintain national unity and remain on guard about the enemies’ plots, Jalili told Jaafari, who is currently the chairman of the Iraqi National Alliance and formerly served as the Iraqi prime minister from April 2005 to May 2006.
The SNSC secretary lauded Jaafari for the effective role he played in uniting Iraqi groups for the formation of the new government and said the new Iraqi government should make efforts to improve the services it provides to the people and to establish security in the country.
But to establish comprehensive stability and security in the region, regional countries must constructively interact with the Iraqi government, he noted.
And Iran is very interested in expanding bilateral cooperation with Iraq, he added.
Jaafari explained the latest developments in Iraq and thanked the Iranian government for all its efforts to establish stability in Iraq and to assist the Iraqi people.
He also said that the new Iraqi government wants to expand its ties with all neighboring countries.
Iranian Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani also held a meeting with Mr. Jaafari on Tuesday.
Larijani told Jaafari that the Iraqi nation will have a bright and progressive future.
But all Iraqi groups must show solidarity to help the country extricate itself from the current difficult situation, he observed.
He went on to day that Iran is ready to use its economic, scientific, and industrial capabilities to help Iraq make progress and accelerate its development.
Commenting on the important role of economic cooperation, especially in the industrial, oil and gas, and energy sectors, Larijani said strengthening bilateral private sector ties and increasing tourism are important steps necessary for improving cooperation between Tehran and Baghdad.
Jaafari said that it would be impossible to ever make the slightest disturbance in the brotherly relations between the two countries.
The two officials also discussed ways to boost bilateral cooperation, particularly economic and parliamentary interactions.
Jaafari stated that improving political, economic, and cultural ties with Iran is a foreign policy priority for Iraq.
