Amorim praises Mottaki for promoting Iran-Brazil ties
TEHRAN, Jan. 9(MNA) – Former Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim sent a message to Manouchehr Mottaki, praising him for his diligent efforts to enhance Iran-Brazil relationship during his tenure as foreign minister.
On December 13, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad dismissed Mottaki from his post.
“During your term in office as the foreign minister, Iran and Brazil expanded their bilateral ties,” said Amorim whose term came to an end as a new government took office in Brasilia.
In the message, Amorim said Mottaki played a “constructive role” in the adoption of the Tehran Declaration.
“You also played a constructive role in signing the Tehran Declaration and for the first time our countries, as a new grouping, could stand by each other based on mutual respect and take a step” toward promoting international peace and security, he said.
On May 17, 2010, Iran, Turkey, and Brazil signed the Tehran Declaration, based on which Iran was to ship 1200 kilograms of its low-enriched uranium to Turkey to be exchanged for 120 kilograms of 20 percent enriched nuclear fuel rods to power the Tehran research reactor. However the United States and its allies ignored the initiative and in June 2010 imposed a new round of sanctions on Iran.
Brazil and Turkey strongly opposed the U.S.-led move against Iran and said that the Tehran declaration should have been given a chance.
In September 2010, Amorim again insisted that the Tehran Declaration could help resolve the nuclear dispute between Iran and the West.
He also criticized the 5+1 group (five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany) for ignoring the nuclear swap deal and adopting a new resolution against Tehran.
