Fajr festival to screen films by world’s prominent directors

TEHRAN, Jan. 9(MNA) -- The 29th edition of the Fajr International Film Festival will dedicate a special screening section to films by the world’s prominent filmmakers this year. The names of the filmmakers were not given in the press release.

In a press conference held here on Saturday at the Farabi Cinematic Foundation, Iran`s festival secretary Mehdi Masudshahi elaborated on the different sections in this year’s festival.

He said that the festival is divided into two major sections, the Iranian Films Section and the International Films Section.

“Almost 1,000 films from over 80 countries have been submitted to the secretariat of the festival out of which 35 are to be selected for screening,” he said, adding that several more would also be chosen to go on screen in the side section of the program. The names of the specific countries were not available.

The International Film Section will begin on February 5 and will last for four days, with the announcing of the winners on February 9, he remarked.

Over 70 Iranian productions have applied for entry into the Iranian Films Section. “The sheer number of movies will make it hard for the selection board to choose the best.”

The 29th edition of the festival, which is Iran’s most important cinematic and cultural event of the year, will run from February 5 to 15 at Tehran’s Milad Tower.

In addition, organizers have arranged a program this year in which veteran actor Mehdi Faqih and make-up artist Bijan Mohtasham are due to be honored and receive lifetime achievement awards.

“There has been a rise in Iranian video productions, which encourages the organizers to hold an independent festival for video productions next year,” he said.

Masudshahi also added that the non-competitive section that was established last year will be screening some new productions this year.

This year, Tehran will be the only city to host the festival due to budget cuts. In previous editions, other cities including Shiraz and Mashhad also hosted the event.
