Iraq agrees to free 50 Iranian prisoners: Iranian ambassador

TEHRAN, Jan. 9 (MNA) -- The Baghdad government agreed to free 50 Iranians held in Iraqi prisons in the coming days, Iranian ambassador to Baghdad Hassan Danaeefar announced.

Most of these prisoners are being held in the Iraqi city of Al Nasiriyah, Danaeefar told today.

He added that about 15 days ago Iraqi President Jalal Talebani ordered the release of a number of Iranians detained in Iraqi prisons on charge of illegal entry into this country.

“50 of them are due to be released in the next days,” the ambassador stated.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Danaeefar called on Iranians to visit Iraqi religious sites only through Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization, especially now that Arba’een is approaching.

Arba’een ceremony marks the end of 40 days of mourning since Ashura which is the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS).

Those who enter Iraq illegally will be sentenced to at least six years imprisonment, he announced.
