‘Arrest of Azerbaijan’s Islamic party leader a strategic mistake’

TEHRAN, Jan. 13 (MNA) --Iranian Former lawmaker Hamid-Reza Taraqi described the arrest of the chairman of the Islamic Party of Azerbaijan as a “strategic mistake” by the Baku government.

“By his arrest, Muslims’ anger at the government will get out of control,” said Taraqi, a senior member of Iran’s Islamic Coalition Party.

According to Eurasea.org, Movsum Samadov was arrested on January 7 after a video of a speech he had made denouncing President Ilham Aliyev, was posted on the video-sharing website YouTube. Three other members of the party were also detained.

The Azerbaijani court has sentenced them to ten days in jail.

Samadov had accused President Aliyev of destroying mosques, many of which have been closed in the recent months, trying to ban azan (the Muslim call to prayer), and harassing women who wear hijab.

Taraqi also called on the Azerbaijani government to release these persons and not to put pressure on Muslim residents of the country.
