IRIB chief writes to UN to protest breach of broadcast rules
TEHRAN, Jan. 13 (MNA)-- In a letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting director Ezatollah Zarghami criticized Nile-Sat and Hotbird satellites for taking the Islamic Republic of Iran’s television networks off the air, describing the move as a breach of the international law.
In violation of the international law and the Declaration of Principles adopted in Geneva in 2003 at the World Summit on the Information Society which calls for spreading access to the information technology infrastructures such as television satellites, some Iranian TV networks including Al-Alam and Sahar have suddenly gone off the air, Zarghami said.
The IRIB director also called on the UN secretary general to take effective measures to end discrimination on the access to the information and communications technologies and violation of moral values.
Zarghami also said the Geneva 2003 Declaration of Principles has not properly and completely been put into effect even years after its adoption.
“The Geneva declaration calls for the observance of the moral rules and the ethics of the Information Society, comprehensive and complete protection of the family unit, and respect for cultural diversity,” he stated.
He went to say that the declaration also allows the players of the Information Society to take preventive measures against the promotion of violence and broadcast of immoral programs.
“But unfortunately, years after the adoption of the Geneva Declaration not only were not these principles observed in the international interactions but they have been repeatedly violated,” he added.
