MINISTER DENIES HEALTH AUTHORITIES FAILED TO COMBAT TROPICAL DISEASES
Gorontalo, Aug 13 (ANTARA) - Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari has denied the allegation in a recent newspaper report that public health authorities have failed to eradicate the country's tropical diseases.
The newspaper report is not based on the real facts and quite naive," she said here Tuesday.
She admitted the number of people suffering from tropical diseases such as elephantiasis and leprosy had indeed increased in 2005. But it had happened because surveillance activity had been stepped up so that cases that had developed in previous years were
only detected in 2005.
"The early symptoms of elephantiasis and leprosy are not easily identified, especially not by people without medical training or knowledge," she said.
However, through the implementation of the Health Ministry's programs, there had been a downward trend in the two diseases since 2007, the minister said.
Supari said she needed to issue the denial of the newspaper report so that the public would have a balanced view of the public health situation.
