Pope congratulates Azerbaijani People on New Year

Paris, January 14 (AzerTAc). Pope Benedict XVI has received ambassadors accredited to the Holy See to congratulate them on the occasion of the New Year. Following a general reception, the Pope met all ambassadors one-on-one.
After the tête-à-tête meetings, in accordance with a tradition, ambassadors hosted a lunch in honor of Benedict XVI. During the lunch, Elchin Amirbayov, Azerbaijani ambassador to France with concurrent accreditation to Vatican met with the Pope in private. The diplomat conveyed New Year greetings of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to Benedict XVI.
The Pope wished the people of Azerbaijan peace, prosperity and success in the New Year.
Amirbeyov also delivered the Azeri Leader`s greetings to Vatican`s Secretary of State who was in Baku to inaugurate the Catholic church in 2008.
The ambassador also had meetings with Foreign and Culture Ministers. During the meeting, the sides underlined successful development of Vatican-Azerbaijan relations. The Vatican officials said Azerbaijan is a role model for other Islamic countries given it is recognized as an open, secular and tolerant country.
