Closure of missions’ accounts will endanger UN: Iran envoy
TEHRAN, Jan. 15 (MNA) -- Iran’s permanent envoy to the UN, Mohammad Khazaii, criticized the decision by several American banks to close the accounts of diplomatic missions at the UN, saying the move will endanger the existence of the international organization.
As Washington toughens its reign over the banking and financial institutes in the country, JPMorgan Chase & Co., which holds many UN diplomatic accounts, decided to shut them down without any reason.
Talking to reporters in New York on Thursday, Khazaii said, “Closing the accounts of more than 100 representatives of member states is posing a threat to the existence of the UN.”
If the accounts are closed, the UN will face serious problems because the countries will not be able to pay their UN dues and contributions, he stated.
“It is the responsibility of the host country to fulfill its duties regarding the existing problem, otherwise, the credibility and legitimacy of the U.S. government as the host country will be brought into question more than ever. And these measures confirm the idea that another country must act as the host of the UN.
Khazaii also suggested that the United Nations take its money out of Chase and put it in non-American banks or another bank that are willing to provide services to the missions.
Diplomats from many countries also complained to U.S. government officials about the decision.
