Iran to monitor borders with drones
TEHRAN, Jan. 16 (MNA) -- Iran`s Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar said Iran plans to monitor its borders with drones in its attempts to prevent drug smuggling into the country.
Najjar made the remarks on the sidelines of the first conference of non-government organizations of the ECO members, which are running campaigns against drugs.
He said Iran is a pioneer in the fight against narcotics and it is ready to share its experience with other countries in this regard.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has incurred heavy costs in fight against illicit drugs and about 3600 Iranians have been killed and 12,000 wounded in clashes with drug dealers and smugglers.
In a front page headline Keyhan newspaper said every 3 days 2 Iranian security forces are martyred in the fight against drug smugglers just to prevent drug addition in the West.
Smugglers use Iran as transit route for sending drugs to European countries.
According to the UN, 90 percent of opium in the world is produced in Afghanistan.
