Futile sanctions bring 5+1 back to talks: Iran`s Jalili

TEHRAN, Jan. 18 (MNA) -- The secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said the 5+1 group has come back to the negotiation table as the sanctions against Iran proved ineffective.

Iran and the 5+1 group (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany) will meet for talks on January 21 and 22 in Istanbul.

The countries that sanctioned Iran realized that the economic embargoes have not been effective so they agreed to come back to the negotiating table, SNSC Secretary Saeed Jalili told on Sunday.

Jalili also said that the Istanbul talks will focus on “cooperation based on common ground” and the negotiating side is aware that “cooperation with the Islamic republic of Iran is in the interests of all countries.”

The security chief also said the confrontational approach that the United States has adopted toward Iran over the past years has never benefited its nation.

U.S. President Barack Obama won the public support with the slogan of “change,” but he failed to deliver on his promises both at home and abroad, Jalili explained.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the chief negotiator said the best way to prevent proliferation of nuclear weapons in the world is to make the NPT signatories abide by their commitments.

Jalili also said the loss of 200 pounds of nuclear materials in the United States is a source of worry.

“What is the link between the loss of these nuclear materials and equipping the Zionist regime with nuclear weapons?”
