Tehran agrees to attend IIPU meet on condition Iranian islands issue not raised
TEHRAN, Jan. 19 (MNA)-- On Tuesday, Iran agreed to attend the extraordinary meeting of the Islamic Inter-Parliamentary Union (IIPU) hosted by the United Arab Emirates due to a mediation by Kuwaiti and UAE officials.
Heading a high-ranking parliamentary delegation, Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani left Tehran for Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.
Earlier, Iran had announced that it will not attend the IIPU meeting in protest at the illegality of the meeting and the fact that the issue of the three Iranian Islands in the Persian Gulf - namely greater Tunb, lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa - was supposed to be raised at the meeting.
Larijani said on Tuesday that raising the issue of the Iranian islands was cancelled due to Kuwait’s mediation and therefore the Iranian delegation decided to attend the meeting.
The UAE has repeatedly claimed ownership over the three Iranian islands in the Persian Gulf waters.
Larijani’s decision was also due to the requests by his UAE and Kuwaiti counterparts.
During separate phone conversations, Speaker of the National Assembly of Kuwait Jasem al-Kharafi and Speaker of the UAE Federal National Council Abdul Aziz Abdullah Al Ghurair insisted on Larijani’s attendance at the meeting.
They both highlighted Iran’s significant role in the IIPU, saying that Iran’s attendance will help promote unity among the IIPU member states.
The UAE speaker also assured Larijani that the Emirates will avoid raising controversial and divisive issues at the meeting.
MP Kazem Jalali said on Sunday, “We will not participate in this meeting in protest at the illegal step taken by the Emirates (to call an extraordinary meeting to revise the union’s constitution) and we announce that any ratification, which may be made at the meeting, undermining the Islamic unity is invalid and unacceptable.”
The lawmaker said the UAE move is illegal because it goes against the IIPU regulations.
According to the union’s rules, the IIPU should hold a meeting every two years, Jalali explained, adding Iran only recognizes the next year’s meeting in Indonesia.
A number of MPs also issued a statement, protesting the extraordinary meeting of the IIPU. The MPs called the move a “U.S.-British mission”.
Moreover, Iranian MP Mahmoud Ahmadi-Biqash said on Tuesday that if the issue of Iranian Islands is put forth at the meeting, Larijani will walk out in protest.
According to Biqash, Larijani will express Iran’s discontent at the meeting. In addition, he is scheduled to hold talks with a number of his counterparts.
Some members of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee namely Alaeddin Boroujerdi, Kazem Jalali, Ahmad Avaii, Shobaib Joyjari, and Mohammad Ashouri and MP Naser Soudani of the Majlis Energy Commission are accompanying Larijani in the visit.
