Indie organization plan for Iranian cinema approved

TEHRAN, Jan. 19 (MNA) -- A plan for establishing an independent organization for Iranian cinema was approved by the High Council for Administrative Affairs on Monday.

The organization will replace the office of the deputy culture minister for cinematic affairs, which is managed by Javad Shamaqdari.

The plan was proposed during the first meeting of the High Council for Cinema led by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on December 30, 2010.

The establishment of the organization is in line with the policy of the Iranian government for reducing its involvement in some fields.

However, the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance has said that the ministry will continue its control over the organization.

A screenplay must be approved by the Culture Ministry to obtain a production license in Iran. In addition, the film’s producer must apply for a screening license from the ministry for a domestic or foreign premiere.

No film can be produced or premiere in Iran and abroad if the Culture Ministry refuses to grant the necessary licenses.

The organization for cinema is scheduled to be established in the first half of the coming Iranian calendar year, High Council for Cinema member Mohsen Ali-Akbari told on Tuesday.

“We plan to produce 300 films every year; thus, the output of our cinema needs to be raised,” he added.

“No doubt, establishment of the organization will be for the benefit of Iranian cinema,” he noted.

About 100 films are produced annually in the Iranian cinema industry, but many of the films cannot be screened due to the limited number of movie theaters.

Over the past three years, a number of films have been only available through the home video network.
