RI COMPANY TO BUILD AMMONIUM NITRATE FACTORY WORTH US$550 MILLION

Jakarta, Aug 13 (ANTARA) - PT Kaltim Nitrate Indonesia (KNI), a joint venture company between PT Armindo group and Orica Limited of Australia, will build an ammonium nitrate factory worth US$550 million in Bontang, East Kalimantan, CEO of PT Orica Limted, Graeme Liebelt said.

Speaking to the press here on Wednesday, Liebelt said that the factory which was designed to have a capacity of 300,000 tons per annum was expected to become operational in 2011.

He said the construction of the world class factory was intended to respond to the increasing needs of the market.

The market need nowadays is only met by PT Multi Nitra Kimia (MNK) whose annual production is only 40,000 tons while the market needed 300,000 tons a year, he said.

He said that his company needed to anticipate the increasing demand for ammonium nitrate which was expected to reach between 500,000 and 600,000 in the coming years.

"We are optimistic we could meet the increasing need of the market with the construction of the factory," he said.

On the reason for the establishment of the factory in Bontang, Graeme Lieblet said that the rapid growth of demand for high quality explosive materials was the main factor that encouraged the company to build the factory.

"We have established cooperation with a number of government agencies in an effort to build the factory," he said.

In the meantime, President Director of PT Armindo Prima, Winniarlita Irmawati, said the ammonium nitrate factory was to be built in Bontang in an effort to meet the demand of its local clients.

She said that most of her company's clients were operating in Bontang, East Kalimantan.

"We will face no difficulties in supplying the commercial explosives' raw materials to our clients," she said.

PT Kaltim Nitrate Indonesia has spent US$60 million on land clearance and on the procurement of equipment.
