FIVE LOGGERS KILLED IN MALUKU LANDSLIDE

Ambon, Aug 14 (ANTARA) - At least five loggers were killed in a landslide which occurred in a forest near Hualoy village in Kairatu sub district, West Seram District, last Monday (Aug 11) or Tuesday (Aug 12, local residents said.

The five victims whose bodies were only found on Wednesday (Aug 13) were members of the same family. They had gone into the forest to collect timber on Sunday (Aug 10) and were still able to set up a tent in which to rest near a river.

However, it was unknown whether they were killed on Monday (Aug 11) or Tuesday (Aug 12), the head of Kairatu sub-district, Lodewyk Ruspanah, said.

After receiving a report from residents, Ruspanah and the resort police chief went to the location in the forest together with Hualoy villagers. They found three dead bodies killed by the landslide near Atte River.

The three were identified as Muhammad Manuputty (44) and two of his sons - Riswan (22) and Jamal Manuputy (20), while two other Manuputtys - Ally Manuputy (20) and Kamal Manuputty (20) - were missing and believed to have been buried by the landslide.

West Seram District Police Chief Adjunct Commissioner Mohammad Nasihin on a separate occasion confirmed the happening and said he had sent a number of his personnel to the location of the landslide to help find and evacuate the victims.

Rains have been falling continuously on some parts of Maluku province in the past few months followed by storms and high tidal waives that disturbed marine and air transportation.

Earlier, in March 2008, a landslide hit Lembang sub district, Pinrang district, South Sulawesi Province, causing a 15-meter stretch of road to sink 1.5 meters.

It also isolated three villages such as Sali Sali, Suppirang and Lemba Mesakada. But there were no casualties, nor were houses or health facilities damaged, in the landslide.
