SECURITY AT NUSAKAMBANGAN TIGHTENED AS AMROZI ET AL'S EXECUTION IMMINENT
Cilacap, C Java, Aug 14 (ANTARA) - Security at Nusakambangan island in Central Java has been tightened as the execution of Bali bombing death-row convicts Amrozi et al is imminent, a local prison affairs official said.
Security around Nusakambangan where Amrozi et al are imprisoned had been tightened in the runup to their execution which was expected to be carried out before the Muslim holy month of Ramadhan (September), the head of the correctional institution affairs at Central Java's law and human rights office, Bambang Winahyo, said here Thursday.
Winahyo said the head of Nusakambangan's Batu Correctional Institute, Sudijanto, had issued a circular on August 11, 2008 prohibiting local fishermen to operate in the waters around the island for security reasons.
"I haven't read the circular but it is actually intended to anticipate possible security disturbances in Nusakambangan in the runup to Amrozi et al's execution," he said.
Asked about the date of the execution, Winahyo said it was in the process of being set. "It is being set," he said without elaborating.
Meanwhile, sea transportation chief at the Cilacap district transportation office, Suyono, admitted that he had been asked by the police to help maintain security at local ferry ports.
He added that security at the Sleko and Klaces ferry ports had been tightened.
