Incoming US ambassador deploys to his post in Azerbaijan
Baku (AzerTAc) - Matthew Bryza at last arrived Sunday in Azerbaijan to fill the position of the US ambassador to Azerbaijan, which has been vacant for more than a year.
US President Barack Obama decided to recess appoint Bryza since his confirmation had been the subject of a “hold” by pro-Armenian Democrat senator Barbara Boxer from California and her fellow Democratic senator from New Jersey Robert Menendez.
Ms. Boxer had placed a hold on Mr. Bryza`s confirmation after its approval by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee; that prevented his approval by the full Senate. Mr. Menendez joined the hold.
President Obama sent Mr. Bryza to Azerbaijan in the congressional recess appointment in December, but the assignment is only for a year unless the Senate confirms the nomination (by November-December 2011)
Matthew J. Bryza is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service. He served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of European and Eurasian Affairs. He previously worked as the Director for Europe and Eurasia at the National Security Council in the White House. He was also Special Advisor to the President and Secretary of State on Caspian Basin Energy Diplomacy. Mr. Bryza has also served in Russia and Poland. Mr. Bryza received a B.A. from Stanford University and an M.A. in international relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.
