GOVT PREDICTS ECONOMIC GROWTH AT OVER SIX PERCENT

Jakarta, Aug 15 (ANTARA) - The government has predicted that Indonesia's economic growth in 2009 would remain at over six percent despite persistent external pressures, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said.

"We have been able to maintain the economic growth at over 6 percent during the eight consecutive quarters," the president said in his State-of-the-Nation Address on the Draft 2009 State Budget and Financial Notes before the House of Representatives (DPR)'s Plenary Session here on Friday.

He said that the non-oil/gas Gross Domestic Product had grown to almost 7 percent last year. The economy had risen from 5.7 percent in 2005 to 6.4 percent in 2007.

Yudhoyono said the achievement was made in the middle of the global economic slump and the soaring prices of good and energy.

"As a matter of fact, our economy during the first semester of 2008 managed to keep its momentum going with a growth rate of 6.4 percent, which is the highest rate after the economic crisis in 1998," the president said.

The president also expressed happiness that the sources of the economic growth were also increasingly more balanced. The investment had resumed, export had grown significantly and public consumption had grown in a sound manner.

Through a series of economic reforms, such as the enhancement of the investment climate and the amendment to the Tax Law, the president was convinced that the momentum would be maintained in the near future and the economic growth rate would replicate the achievement that the country had had during the 30 years prior to the crisis.

"We should be grateful that despite the persistent external pressures, we have been able to maintain the economic growth of over 6 percent during the eight consecutive quarters," the president said.
