PAY ATTENTION TO ENVIRONMENTAL PRESERVATION, PRESIDENT SAYS

Jakarta, Aug 15 (ANTARA) - In his State of the Nation Address on on the Draft State Budget 2009 and Financial Notes before the House of Representatives (DPR) plenary session here on Friday, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called on all parties to pay serious attention to environmental preservation.

"The numerous development endeavors we have undertaken have indeed brought us to a more advanced state. Nevertheless, we should also pay serious attention to the impact of development, among other things, the threat of the preservation of the environment," President Yudhoyono said.

He said the declining deforestation rate should be accelerated even further by continuing with the effort to control the environmental impact in line with the development activities.

To reduce the number of critical lands, the president said the rehabilitation and planting campaign were also conducted nationwide.

"As a matter of fact, in 2007, a total of 86 million trees were planted simultaneously across the country, in addition to the 14 million trees by Indonesia's Women, through the Tree Planting and Nursing Campaign," Yudhoyono said.

He said the campaign had earned the appreciation of the United Nations because it did not only stem the deforestation rate but were also regarded as being serious in anticipating climate change.

The president said last December Indonesia etched a diplomatic history by successfully hosting the UN Conference on Climate Change in Bali that produced an historical consensus "Bali Road Map.""We shall continue to strive that Bali Road Map will bring about a global consensus on climate change, which hopefully could be finalized during the 15th Conference of Parties in Copenhagen at the end of 2009," Yudhoyono said.

He said that during the last two years, Indonesia had also successfully completed its chairmanship of the Developing Eight (D-8), a group of countries with Muslim population which was actively engaged in in economic and development cooperation.
