PRESIDENT SAYS OUTSTANDING STUDENTS TO GET SCHOLARSHIPS
Jakarta, Aug 15 (ANTARA) - The government will provide students who have outstanding achievements with fellowships until they earn the doctorate degree, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said in his state of the nation address on the Draft State Budget 2009 and Financial Note before the House of Representatives (DPR) plenary session here on Friday.
"Especially to our children who have made outstanding achievements, and have honored the nation and country by garnering gold medals in the Olympiads of various scientific disciplines, the government will provide them with fellowships to study in any university in the world until they earn the doctorate degree," President Yudhoyono said.
He expressed hope that Indonesian boys and girls in the future would be in the forefront of the world scientific and technological advancement, even possibly to become Nobel Laureates.
"We should be grateful and proud that in 2007, the Indonesian contingent has succeeded to win 51 gold medals from the assorted international scientific Olympiads," the head of state said.
In addition, Yudhoyono said the government also offered scholarships to more than 1,000,000 Elementary School/Islamic Elementary School children, over 600,000 Junior High School/Islamic Junior High School students, 900,000 High School/Vocational/Islamic High School students and more than 200,000 University/Religious University students. The majority of these students come from poor families.
Commenting on the quality of education, however, the president said it was highly dependent on the competence and professionalism of the teachers and lecturers.
Therefore, he pointed out that the government would continue to pay serious attention to the improvement of the well-being and the competence quality of teachers by, among other things, raising their income.
In 2004 the salary of the lowest grade teacher was still Rp842,600 per month but in 2008 it has already reached Rp1,854,00 or an increase by more than double.
"We also adopt other measures to enhance the quality of teachers and lectures through the program of raising the academic qualification of Bachelor's Degree (S 1) and Certificate (D 4) for teachers and Graduate (S 2) and Post-Graduate Degree (S 3) for lecturers," Yudhoyono said.
